Is Mental Illness Real?

A few weeks ago, I read an article on the Observer website – that’s right, I read the Observer – about the newly released DSM-5. It concerns the recently raised debate about whether the freshly discovered mental illnesses are actually real or that they are just human reactions to an ever-changing world. This concerns me, as the side of the argument stating that these new discoveries are not real is starting to win. This concerns me because this new discoveries inexplicably include Social Anxiety and Depression. If these are kicked out of the DSM, then people with these disorders won’t be treated for them and they’ll be left to suffer in silence.
